The Thai coup is a big step backward, damaging democracy in a country which held a series of competitive elections after decades of rapid economic growth. There are also potential regional implications, as Thailand's undemocratic military rulers may be tempted to look more to China, itself facing growing isolation over its controversial maritime territorial claims.
